According to the 2000 Census, Bergen County is ranked number two in the state with the highest Asian population. Additionally, between 1990-2000 in Bergen County that population grew 73% from 54,660 to 94,324. Fifty-nine percent or 56,323, live in Vantage's twenty-five town service area which includes: Alpine, Bergenfield, Cliffside Park, Closter, Cresskill, Demarest, Dumont, Edgewater, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fairview, Fort Lee, Harrington Park, Haworth, Leonia, Northvale, Norwood, Old Tappan, Palisades Park, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park, River Vale, Rockleigh, Teaneck and Tenafly.

At that time, forty-three percent (43%) or 24,714 of those individuals living in our service area were Korean and less than 1% received mental health services (based on NJ State Service data). The 2010 census will most likely indicate a higher number.

With that knowledge, in 2005 Vantage Health System, Inc. a 501 C 3 Not For Profit Corporation saw the need for a bi-lingual Korean counselor to serve the ever growing Korean population here in Bergen County. We applied for and received a grant to hire a bi-lingual Korean/English speaking Licensed Professional Counselor. In addition to treating adolescents, adults and families, the counselor provides free consultation and presentations to local community Korean churches and organizations and public schools. He translated Vantage's brochure into Korean and has translated many other documents into the Korean language. He has also provided our non-Korean staff with important cultural information on Korean culture and has published articles on mental health in local Korean newspapers.

The main goals of this service are to:

  1. Educate the Korean community about mental health issues and resources.
  2. Outreach to Korean social service agencies, schools and health systems working with the Korean population.
  3. Increase cultural competency of mental health staff
  4. Provide direct mental health services to Korean Individuals and families.

Vantage accepts Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance. Individuals with no insurance may be eligible for reduced fees based on income.
